            Family Counseling

            Picture

            "If the family were
            a fruit, it would
            be an orange,
            a circle of
            sections, held
            together but
            separable --
            each segment
             distinct."

            ~Letty Cottin
            Pogrebin

Remember the image you had in your head when you were young of the family that
you would one day have? Does it in any way resemble your real-life family? In some ways, it probably looks a lot like what you imagined. In other ways, you may be thinking that this wasn't quite what you envisioned!

Some of the problems you probably face are easily identifiable and quickly resolved. However, sometimes you may feel like you are standing in the eye of a tornado as the conflicts and struggles are swirling around you and growing larger. If this is the case, you are not alone! Today's world is a complex one, which means that family structures, interactions, communications, and dynamics have also become more complex.

Some of the difficulties that families are dealing with today include:
            • Differences in parenting style
            • Child's disruptive behavior
            • The effects of one parent's unemployment, depression, etc. on the family
            • In-law relationships
            • Divorce
            • Blending two families together
            • Lack of communication and support
            • Emotional distance
            • Times of transition (ex: a child leaving for college)
            • Long-term illness or injury

Don't get discouraged. There is hope and there is help. With a background in Marriage and Family Therapy, I am trained to work with the entire family to uncover and explore the specific patterns, behaviors, expectations, and communication styles of the family members that create the discord.  Family counseling is not about determining who is right and wrong, nor is it about placing blame. I consider the entire family my client, which means that my goal is to get the family to a place of healthy functioning again.

If you think your family could benefit from counseling but don't think you can get all your family members to come, that's ok! Bring in as many as you can and we'll go from there. It is usually the case that one person gets the ball rolling and eventually the rest of the family begins to see the benefits and joins the effort.

If you have any questions about family counseling , or about my practice or therapeutic approach, please contact me. I'd love to have the opportunity to help!
