            "To love is to risk
             not being loved
            in return. To
            hope is to risk
            pain. To try
            is to risk failure,
            but the risk
            must be taken because the

            greatest
            hazard in
            life is to risk nothing."

            ~ Leo Buscaglia

            My Background

I am a native of the Sacramento area having grown up in Arden Park and attending Rio Americano High School. After leaving Northern California to obtain my BA in Psychology from UC Santa Barbara, I returned to Nor Cal to earn my Single Subject Teaching Credential (in English, Language Arts) from CSU Stanislaus. After spending a year among the vineyards and orchards of Turlock, I returned to Sacramento to begin my teaching career. I later moved to Roseville and live just a couple of blocks from Royer Park.

            My Experience

After pursuing my teaching career at the middle and high school levels for over 10 years, I decided that I could better help teens, parents, and families by becoming a therapist, so I enrolled in the Marriage and Family Therapy Master's Program at Alliant International University.

During my Master's program at Alliant International University, I was a Marriage & Family Therapy Trainee at the KidsFirst non-profit community organization (formerly Family Resource Center) in Roseville. During my year there, I practiced over 500 hours of individual, couple, teen, and child therapy. My clients sought therapy for help with a wide range of issues ranging from childhood trauma and anger management to depression and marital conflict.

            Intern Status

A Marriage and Family Therapy Intern is the designation given to one who has completed a graduate program in Marriage and Family Therapy and is registered as an intern with the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS). The BBS requires marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) to acquire 3,000 hours of practice before taking the California Licensing Exam. During this period preceding licensure, an intern is supervised by an approved licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who has received supervision training.

All MFT graduate programs require their students to complete a specific number of therapy hours to meet their graduation requirements. However, that specific number varies considerably depending on the program. My MFT program at Alliant International University requires 500 hours of practice in order to graduate, among the most of all MFT programs in the nation. Some programs require as little as 150 hours of practice to graduate, so keep in mind that not all interns have the same training.

            About My Supervision

I am supervised by Sean Davis, PhD, LMFC45885. He has been working with individuals, couples, and families for over 10 years in four different states. Sean Davis, PhD, has worked primarily in university clinics, government agencies, and private practice. He was a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Kentucky (License No. KY0634), and is now a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in California.

Sean Davis, PhD, is the Associate Professor and Site Director in Alliant International University's Sacramento Campus. Alliant is one of the foremost MFT training programs on the west coast, and the only COAMFTE-Accredited (the highest level of MFT accreditation in the United States) MFT Training program in Northern California. At Alliant Dr. Davis teaches graduate MFT courses, conducts research, and writes professional articles and books.

Sean Davis, PhD, is a Clinical Member and Approved Supervisor Candidate of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), the national professional organization for Marriage and Family Therapists. He's also recently finished writing three books for Marriage and Family Therapists, and is a popular local presenter.
